The Odyssey That Sank: Lessons from a Bot Gone Rogue

My Odyssey odyssey has officially come to an end—and it was a short, bumpy ride. Yesterday, I got the dreaded email warning me that the account was running on fumes. I shrugged it off, knowing full well that with all the open trades, the journey out would be like trying to escape quicksand.

Having seen bots sink under their own weight before, I knew better than to throw more money at the problem. Adding funds to a sinking bot is like pouring water into a leaky boat—it doesn’t save you, it just delays the inevitable. This morning, the inevitable arrived. Odyssey went down, and unfortunately, it took my account with it.

Lessons Learned: A Post-Odyssey Debrief

  1. “Trust the Bot” Isn’t Always a Winning Strategy:
I’m a “set it and forget it” kind of bot owner. Once the bot starts doing its thing, I want it to be super-passive. I don’t want to play the role of co-pilot, navigator, or emergency mechanic. If the bot can’t untangle itself from a mess, it’s not the bot for me.
  2. NURP Bots: Good on Paper, Not for Me:
NURP may make excellent products—for someone else. After the summer 2024 meltdown, I expected better safeguards this time around. Instead, the bot went off the deep end, and I wasn’t equipped (or willing) to dive in after it.
  3. US Brokers: Still Not There Yet:
I’ve heard the stories: “My bot makes a lot and loses some. But when it makes, it really makes.” That’s great for others, but it hasn’t been my experience. Based on what I’ve seen, if there are alternatives to US brokers, I’m taking them.

EFX vs. NURP: A Tale of Two Approaches

When the Octane bot stumbled in the post-tariff chaos, EFX stepped in with updates and reassurances. Their emails explained the bot’s “preserve equity” mode, which didn’t solve everything but at least let me know someone was paying attention.

NURP, on the other hand, didn’t even send a goodbye note. When I tried to cancel my account this morning, they hit me with a sales pitch for another bot. Hard pass. Maybe that’s an option for someone else, but after this experience, I’m done.

Final Thoughts: The Calm After the Storm

Anyone reading this is free to invest in whatever bot they want. You don’t need me to tell you what to do with your money—but if you’ve read even a handful of my posts, you probably already know how I’d advise you.

Whatever you do, wait until the markets calm down first. Trust me, the bots aren’t going anywhere—but your account might.
