Octane’s 96 Problems: The Life and Times of an Algo-Bot

GBPUSD trades I wish were closed by my Octane bot.

As I sit down to write this, my Octane bot has a lot on its digital mind. It’s juggling 96 trades, and about a third of them are tied up in AUDNZD. But let’s not forget the real troublemaker: GBPUSD. Those trades are almost single-handedly responsible for the bot’s drawdown.

But hey, the drawdown can’t last forever, right? (Right?!)

The GBPUSD Saga

I keep telling myself it’ll be a glorious day when the GBPUSD trades finally close. Will it? I don’t actually know. But with only two of those trades carrying over from last year, I can’t exactly blame the bot for acting on impulse. It’s not out there flipping coins; it’s trying to make a profit while managing the drawdown it’s stuck in.

The problem isn’t that the bot can’t make money—it can and does. The issue is that the drawdown limits its ability to take on larger lot sizes, which could bring quicker profits. It’s like trying to run a marathon with ankle weights: you’ll get there, but it’s going to take a while.

When Bots Get Blamed

Whenever someone complains that their bot didn’t deliver great profits in a given month, I can’t help but think: it’s not entirely the bot’s fault. The longer a bot is on the job, the more variables it has to deal with.

Here’s the thing: if one bot starts this week and another starts next week, their future earnings could be wildly different. Why? Because no two bots live the same “life.” Just like humans, their experiences are shaped by a variety of factors:

  • Account Size: Bigger accounts can take bigger risks (and potentially earn bigger rewards).
  • Risk Settings: Conservative settings will play it safe, while aggressive ones might rack up bigger wins—or losses.
  • Broker Dynamics: The speed of trade execution and broker-specific quirks could make a difference.

And let’s not forget the wild cards: political events, international crises, or domestic issues. These can all create opportunities—or landmines—that a bot has to navigate in real time.

The Bot’s Burden

Sometimes, the decisions a bot makes in the heat of the moment can look disastrously wrong in hindsight. What seemed like a golden opportunity at the time might turn into months of untangling a mess.

That’s algo-bot trading for you. It’s not a perfect science—it’s an unpredictable adventure. And in the life of a bot, every decision, variable, and trade adds up to a unique story.

Final Thoughts

So, here’s to Octane and its 96 open trades. May it keep grinding away, closing those pesky GBPUSD trades, and proving that even with drawdowns and ankle weights, it can still make progress.

After all, bots are just doing their best in a world as unpredictable as the humans who program them.
