The Octane Bot Has Embraced Its Drawdown

While this graphic at myfxbook is not updated, the drawdown sits at almost 19% today.

The EFX Octane bot takes you money and grows it. The growth is not the same every month, but rarely is it a loser. It may earn less than 1%, but again rarely is it a loser.

Last year’s monthly gains using this bot.

EFX gives two points of advice when operating one of their bots. (In fairness, I believe all algo providers will provide the same recommendations.)

  1. Don’t pull money out of your account if the account is going through a high drawdown. If you pull money out, the account will be forced into a higher drawdown. How? When the balance of the account drops, the present drawdown becomes a higher percent of the remaining balance. This being said, only pull out funds when the bot is in single digit drawdown. Or, at a minimum, be aware of the impact of your withdrawals on your bot.
  2. When your bot is in an extended drawdown, it is a good time to add funds. While withdrawing funds negatively effects the drawdown, adding funds will reduce the drawdown. A drawdown of 20% on an account of $100,00 becomes a drawdown of 16.7%. Depending on the algo bot, a reduced drawdown might give it more latitude in its decisions.

I have been debating for a nearly a month, but I am likely to act next week. I am almost certain to move money from one of my other investments to this account. My obvious hope is it will give the algo bot the nudge it needs to shake off these lingering trades.
